The Social Planning Council of Kitchener-Waterloo is seeking project workers to assist with achieving the objectives of ConnectKW, a network of public internet access sites across K-W. Project Workers will provide technology training through regular visits to community sites across the city, and through small group workshops which they will develop and facilitate. Read more

Social Assistance Review Commission Consultation

On Tuesday August 9th, the Social Planning Council of Kitchener-Waterloo
and partners in the K-W Poverty Free Action Group hosted a forum to allow
members of the Kitchener-Waterloo community to discuss and give input to
the Social Assistance Review Commission consultation. More than 55 people
participated, including those who receive support through Ontario Works or
the Ontario Disability Support Program, interested community and family
members, retired professionals, social service providers, faith community

Questions for candidates about social assistance (OW and ODSP) and poverty

The ODSP Action Coalition, The Income Security Advocacy Centre (ISAC) and
the Steering Committee on Social Assistance have prepared questions for
people to use to talk to their candidates about social assistance (OW and
ODSP) and poverty issues during the election. They also describe changes
at Elections Ontario that will be of benefit to people with disabilities. Read more

Waterloo Region launch of ISARC 2010 Social Audit Report

Poverty-Free Waterloo Region is a coalition of local organizations working to eradicate poverty. Waterloo Region was one of dozens of communities across Ontario that took part in the 2010 Social Audit report which focused on whether life was better for those living in poverty than in 2005 when the first social audit took place. Sixteen Waterloo Region groups contributed input to the social audit. The coalition is hosting a presentation of the 2010 audit from the Interfaith Social Assistance Coalition (ISARC): Friday, December 10, 2010, 9:30-10:30am at Cambridge Self Help Food Bank, 2nd floor, 54 Ainslie St. S. International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Friday December 3rd is the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities and the theme for 2010 is progress has been made on achieving integration of persons with disabilities into the Millennium Goals. A mini-rally (PDF) will be hosted by the Disabilities and Human Rights Group at 12:00 noon at Speakers Corner at King and Frederick St. in downtown Kitchener. At that time speakers will present on topics related to progress (e.g. public transit) as well as lack of progress (e.g. poverty), and community members will be invited to share their experiences.
